Cash drawers come in a number of different sizes, allowing them to fit in whatever space you
have available. However, the most common cash drawer size is 16 x 16. 6 compartment drawers have an extra-large compartment in them. Some people use this extra bill slot to hold checks, while the extra coin tray can be used to hold coins.

All cash drawers follow a similar setup. Depending on their dimensions, you may have fewer bill slots and coin trays, but it’s crucial to find a cash drawer with the right dimensions for your space.

To help accommodate smaller spaces, we’ve created smaller cash drawers that are perfect for small, limited spaces. In addition to traditional cash drawer sizes, our small cash drawer is also made for those who need a drawer to fit in tight, cramped spaces.

I Need a Smaller Cash Tray Than the Standard Size

The great news about cash trays is that they’ve been around for a long time. They’re one of the oldest technologies, and for good reason. They work well, keep hard currency organized, and are simple to use. For a while, there was often only one standard size of cash tray available, but now, as resources have expanded and technology has advanced, there are more sizes available on the market to choose from.

Before you can determine the best cash tray size for your business, though, you will need to ask yourself a few questions:

  • What currency are you using, and how does it need to be sorted?
  • What type of storage system do you have?
  • What size considerations do you need to keep in mind?

Depending on the currency you use, you may need a cash tray with more coin slots than bill slots or vice versa. Take the American dollar, for example. One American dollar is usually a bill, even if there are coin dollars on the market. One Euro, however, will always be a coin, and so will two Euros. Businesses that take the Euro will need to be prepared to take in a larger variety of coins than businesses that take the American dollar.

What Should I Keep In Mind When Looking for a Cash Drawer?

You know your business’s unique needs best, but here are some things to keep in mind no matter:

  • Security: Does the cash drawer lock or have other security features?
  • Durability: How strong is the drawer? Does it move smoothly, and is it able to withstand day-to-day use?
  • Cost: Is it affordable for your business without sacrificing necessary features?

How Much Money Should Be in a Cash Drawer?

When it comes to how much money should be in your cash drawer at the start of each day, it really depends on your business. Smaller businesses will be fine with $100 in petty cash, although some may choose to have as much as $150 each morning. Larger businesses will want to use more.

A good rule of thumb is to have at least $20 in five-dollar bills and $20 in one-dollar bills. To give yourself some variety, you may also want to add $20 in ten-dollar bills and $40 in twenty-dollar bills. This way, if someone comes in with a fifty-dollar bill, you have enough cash on hand to break it.
